Drug and alcohol support vital in the workplace

If you own or manage an Australian workplace, having a robust drug and alcohol management policy is a vital part of an overall health and safety plan. And a vital part of any good drug and alcohol policy will be detailing the support you will provide employees who present with issues relating to drugs or alcohol.

How can you provide drug and alcohol support for employees?

For most small to medium businesses, and even large businesses, providing the support required for employees who need help with drug or alcohol issues isn’t easy. You’re unlikely to have the in-house resources required to provide this support and in some cases employees may be unwilling to report their issue to resources located within the business.

Thankfully, there is a place where you and your employees can turn to take the first step.

First Step to drug and alcohol support

First Step is a Melbourne-based not-for-profit organisation that helps people overcome drug and alcohol issues, as well as the health and social issues that are often associated with drug and alcohol abuse.

First Step is a one-stop-shop for drug and alcohol support. With specialised medical care delivered by doctors, mental health workers, psychologists and social workers in the one place, First Step has all the resources required to help those with drug and alcohol issues. Just as importantly, it’s a free service for most people.

If you own or manage a workplace, First Step is also a valuable resource. As part of your robust drug and alcohol management plan, you can direct employees who need help with drug or alcohol issues to First Step, rather than trying to deal with the issues in-house.

To find out more about First Step, see their website or phone them on 03 9537 3177.

Integrity Sampling is proud supporter of First Step.

If you live outside of Victoria and are keen to provide similar support for your employees, look for an organisation in your State or Territory who provides similar services to First Step. Your State or Territory Government website may be a good starting point.

The first step to providing employees with drug and alcohol support is to contact First Step.
