Why conduct alcohol testing in your Tasmanian business?

Why should you conduct alcohol testing in your Tasmanian business? If an employee goes to the pub for lunch and consumes a beer or two, or comes to work after a big night out, are they really a danger to themselves and others? Are they more likely to be involved in an accident?

While the affects of over indulgence in alcohol are relatively common knowledge, what’s less known is the affects that even a small amount of alcohol can have on our brains and bodies. Affects that we’re sure you’ll agree, don’t belong in a workplace.

The affects of alcohol

Firstly, it’s wise to point out that alcohol affects people in different ways. For example, a big, burly bloke is likely to be less affected by alcohol than a smaller person. Males are generally less affected by alcohol than females (sorry ladies!). And factors such as whether you’ve eaten recently, percentage of body fat and experience with alcohol will also play a part.

That said, even a pot of beer or a small glass of wine can affect anyone. You don’t need to be over 0.05% blood alcohol concentration (BAC) for the affects to kick in.

That’s because even a small amount of alcohol can affect your ability to concentrate and your judgement. It can also reduce your general performance and effectiveness at a given task. Perhaps not so important if your Tasmanian workplace is a corporate office, but potentially dangerous if it’s a factory, mine, farm or truck.

Which is why stricter blood alcohol limits of 0.00% apply to people such as pilots, drivers of heavy vehicles and learner drivers.

Approaching 0.05% BAC and over, the affects of alcohol become more and more obvious. These affects can include:

  • Poor vision
  • A reduction in reaction times
  • Drowsiness and fatigue
  • Sensory understanding difficulties
  • Poor concentration and judgement
  • Overconfidence and risk taking

Really, it doesn’t matter what job you do, these types of affects simply don’t belong in the workplace. Which is one of the reason why conducting alcohol testing in your Tasmanian business is not just a good thing to do, it’s a business imperative.
